Message from the Executive Director – Summer 2016
Mar 07, 2019

Message from the Executive Director

The upcoming Republican National Convention (RNC) in Cleveland is scheduled for July 18-21.  The OPBA represents a significant number of members in the Cuyahoga County area who work where the RNC activities will be taking place.  The OPBA is also aware members may be traveling to the area to assist the Cleveland Police Department with security.

The Staff at the OPBA has been planning for several months how the OPBA will deliver services to our members within the RNC area.  As of this writing details are not final but please continue to follow the OPBA on Facebook for the latest RNC/OPBA details.

The OPBA continues to be mindful of our members needs on the Federal level.  I traveled to Washington D.C. during May and met with members of Congress.

I met with public officials and/or the staffs of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, Congressman Steve Chabot, Congressman Jim Renacci and Congressman Patrick Tiberi.  I also met with Senator Patrick Toomey (PA) and Congressman David Jolley (FL).  The issues discussed are priorities of the OPBA and the National Association of Police Organization (NAPO).  The issues included: Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Program Reauthorization Act (S125, H.R.228); the Honoring Emergency Response Officer (HERO) Benefits Reform Act (H.R. 5123); the Social Security Fairness Act (S1651, H.R. 973); Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act (H.R. 711); the Thin Blue Line Act (S2034, H.R. 814); the Lifesaving Gear for Police Act (S2694); and the Protecting Lives using Surplus Equipment Act (H.R. 4880).

I know many of us do not like politics, feel that our voice does not matter or just feel that our elected representatives are out of touch and don’t care.  YOUR VOTE is YOUR VOICE in the upcoming election and DOES MATTER.  If you are not registered to vote or need to change your address to vote, please consider making these changes during the summer months.  Please contact your local Board of Elections so you can vote in November.

The OPBA continued to educate our members throughout the State.  OPBA attorneys, along with arbitrators, conducted training sessions in the Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo areas.  Over 100 members attended these very worthwhile training sessions.

Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh has asked our membership to voice, to Ohio House and Senate members, their opposition to bills affecting Civil Forfeiture.  Prosecutor Bevan Walsh has asked OPBA members to visit the OPBA Facebook page and sign the petition against the elimination of Civil Forfeiture.

OPBA members and their families have again SOLD OUT our annual Family Days.  Over 1,300 members and their families from 125 departments have or will attend this year’s outings.

******************************************************************************

The OPBA Annual Golf Outing is scheduled for July 11th at Lakeforest Country Club in Hudson.  The cost is $120 which includes golf, prizes, lunch, dinner and draft beer.  Please call the OPBA office ASAP to register.  The outing is limited to the first 144 golfers.

As you may be aware the OPBA website is undergoing substantial changes.  I am hopeful that the new OPBA website will be launched in July.  In the meantime, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter.  You may also notice that all of our staff emails have changed to a web address ending in @1f4.29c.myftpupload.com.  Please remember this when communicating with your attorney, business agent or other staff member.

STAY SAFE, WATCH OUR FOR EACH OTHER and Enjoy Your Summer!
