Message from the Executive Director – Winter 2016
Mar 07, 2019

It’s finally over!  The 2016 Election is complete and whether you agree or not Donald Trump has now been elected the 45th President of the United States.  The National Association of Police Organization (NAPO) of which the OPBA is a member, has published an outlook on a Trump Presidency and a Republican controlled congress.  This outlook is posted in the later pages of this magazine.

While we are talking about the election the OPBA was successful in several races.  Congratulations to Judge Pat DeWine (Ohio Supreme Court), Tom Patton (Ohio House of Representatives), Todd Corbin (Huron County Sheriff) Judge Lynne Callahan (9th District Court of Appeals), Sherri Bevan Walsh (Summit County Prosecutor) and Citizens for a Better Ashland.  As of press time the election for Ohio Supreme Court Justice between Judge John O’Donnell and Judge Patrick Fischer has not been decided.  Congratulations to all of the OPBA endorsed Winners!

The attacks on law enforcement continue and again OPBA members were involved.  OPBA Attorneys represented members from the Westlake and Willoughby Police Departments in officer involved shootings.  Please keep these officers and all officers and OPBA members in your thoughts and prayers.

Unfortunately, the 2016 statistics on law enforcement duty deaths continue to rise from 2015.  Gunfire deaths are up 70% and auto related deaths have risen 12% from 2015.  While these statistics are terrible a statistic that is finally positive is how Americans feel about Police.  An October 2016 Gallup Poll Found that 76% of Americans say they have “a great deal” of respect for police in their area.  According to Gallup the only other time police had a higher rating was in 1967 which was 77%.  The Gallup poll further revealed that respect for police has increased among both whites and nonwhites.

It is that time of year for nominations for the 24th Annual TOP COPS Awards Ceremony.  Please see the nomination form in this issue, the OPBA Facebook Page or www.NAPO.org.

Happy Holidays and have a Great New Year.  Stay Safe and Watch each other’s backs!
