Cops Ride
The Cops Ride board would like to thank its sponsors, volunteers and most importantly its participants for a successful first ride. On Sunday June 14, 2009 the first annual Cops Ride charity motorcycle rally was held in Cleveland, Ohio. The ride started at the Greater Cleveland Peace Officer Memorial in downtown Cleveland. Approximately 900 motorcycle riders participated in the 50 mile ride. The ride went through two counties, 14 communities and passed by 8 different police stations. It ended at Lake Erie Harley Davidson in Avon, Ohio where riders were treated to food and entertainment.
The ride benefited the Ohio chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). It raised $15,000.00 for Ohio C.O.P.S. An additional $1,000.00 was donated to the family of Ohio Department of Youth Services Corrections Officer William Hesson who was killed in the line of duty on April 29, 2009.
The 2010 Cops Ride will be Sunday, June 20, 2010. The ride will benefit the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial Society (www.policememorialsociety.org ). The Memorial Society serves seven northern Ohio counties by honoring all law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. It provides assistance to police officers seriously injured in the line of duty and assists law enforcement agencies with planning and implementation of Line of Duty Death funerals. The Memorial Society creates public awareness of the hazards of the law enforcement profession and improves police-community relations. They further the law enforcement profession by sponsoring training, and humanitarian programs, as well as educational development such as the Pete Lawer Memorial Scholarship fund.
The Memorial Society is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2010 and is completing an extensive renovation of its memorial. The memorial is located at Huntington Park at the intersection of W.3rd St. and Lakeside Avenue in downtown Cleveland.
